Hi,
Just recently installed WSWIN 2.0  (on Win 98) from an old set of disks in order to access some old WSWIN files.  When I click on the Wswin.exe icon (blue world with star icon)  I immediately get a black dos pop up stating, 'Insufficient Memory'.   Any ideas?
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

Is that the total message? If so, WSWin isn't creating it. I'm also surprised that you're seeing this in a DOS window. Your WSWIN.EXE icon sounds more like a shortcut than the program itself. Use Windows Explorer to go to your WSWin folder - usually C:\WSWIN, and find the actual program there; then double-click on that and see if it helps.

If it does, right-click on your original WSWIN.EXE icon and select properties. Check that the Target value is the same as the WSWIN.EXE file in the C:\WSWIN folder (or wherever you installed WSWin). Also make sure that the Start In vaule is the WSWin folder. Typically these are: C:\WSWIN\WSWIN.EXE, and C:\WSWIN respectively.

If you're starting WSWin through a DOS batch file to load the ALT/CAP LOCK key switcher SWITCH.COM and then WSWin, it could be that there's insufficient DOS memory free to load SWITCH.COM. If this is the case you'll either need to fiddle with CONFIG.SYS to free more memory, or use a Windows based key switcher instead. Have a look at my Emulator program FAQ page for some ideas for this - it's relevent to WSWin in this case too.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply.  Through Windows Explorer my file is under C:\WSWIN and if I click on the Wswin.exe I get the black msdos popup with just 'Insufficient memory' stated.  I tried re-loading the disks to a new WSWIN1 folder and now if I click on the Wswin.exe I get error: Cannot find WSWINAPI.DLL !!
I can see the SWITCH.COM and it states MS-DOS Application.  Is there something to do here or is the WSWINAPI.DLL maye the issue?   Also, I couldn't locate your 'Emulator program FAQ page'

Mike

Hi Mike,

Try right-clicking on the WSWIN.EXE icon and selecting Properties. Make sure that it says that the type of file is Application, and not that it gives you a list of things like Target, Start In, Shortcut Key, Run, etc.

If it gives you the list of options it's a shortcut to WSWin and not the actual program. In this case make sure that Target = C:\WSWIN\WSWIN.EXE and Start In = C:\WSWIN. The rest doesn't matter.

SWITCH.COM is only useful if you want to swap the Ctrld Cap Lock keys and don't do this using another program. The Emulator FAQ article that covers swapping these keys is located at: http://www.wordstar.org/wsemu/word/pages/faq.htm#FAQ59. One day I'll get around to making this a seperate page.

I'm also surprised you're getting a DOS popup window for your message. However, another reason WSWin2 gives an insufficient memory message is when it thinks the default printer is one thing, but it turns out to be another when you try to open WSWin2.

It's possible you have a printer with a similar configuration, but not the exact same one, installed on your current system, or none at all like the one you had before. If nothing else works, you may need to figure out what that printer was and install it (you don't have to have an actual printer to install one).

I can walk you through identifying the name of the printer and installing it if it turns out you need to go that route. The details are tedious, but doable. You should try the other suggestions first  :).

Hi,  No luck!  The wswin.exe icon under properties shows type as 'Application'.  I thought maybe the files were corrupt so I have deleted the old files from C:\wswin and have tried to re-install again from the 6 wswin v2.0 disk set I have but clicking on setup.exe, on Disk 1,  I get  a setup initialization error: Insufficient memory or diskspace' !!  It's Win98 and there is 3GB of free disk space on the hardrive so any ideas where the problem lies?
Thanks

Mike,

Do you have a Logitek mouse driver installed? These have been reported to cause this problem. If so, try killing off the em_exec task using Task Manager. There's a page in the WSWin section of the site that gives a few more details: http://www.wordstar.org/wswin/kb/Q1048.htm.

Your only other real alternative may be to instally WSWin on a different PC and copy the installation across onto the PC where you want it. The same page lists all the files you'll need to copy.

Hi Mike,

It's a Microsoft mouse driver!  I have a Win2000 laptop and tried again to install but as soon as I try to install Disk 1 it just states 'unable to read Disk'!  Is there a known problem installing WSWIN on to Win2000 or should I be able to do this okay?  This is ideally what I'd lke to be able to do but not sure why it can't read the disks?

Mike

Mike,

You seem to be going from one problem to another. There can be setup problems under Windows 2000 or XP, but not for an unreadable disk. Can you copy these files onto your hard disk using Explorer? It sounds like the floppy has given up.

Installation problems are listed on this Web page:
http://www.wordstar.org/wswin/kb/Q1040.htm.
This is the only one I remember, other than a mouse driver causing too little memory errors. The reporter had a Logitek mouse, but it's possible others cause the problem too.

If your floppy isn't dead, your best option is probably still to find someone with Windows NT, 98, Me, etc., and install it there and then copy all the files to your PC.

There are some problems with using WSWin in Windows 2000 and XP once you do get it installed. You may like to look at these:
http://www.wordstar.org/wswin/kb/Q1041.htm and:
http://www.wordstar.org/wswin/kb/Q1042.htm

If you need a replacement fro disk 1 have have the UK version that I could email.
