Title: discontinued converters
Post by: rkm7072 on August 19, 2004, 11:14:57 PM
HI folks,
Can someone take pity on someone trying to rescue his old wordstar files from maybe 10 years ago:  Wordstar 4 or 2000?

I saw the note about microsoft discontinuing the wordstar converter pack and don't know where to turn.

I think I'm running Word 2000 on Windows 98 at home and seem to be running word 2002 on my work computer.

Use Windows Notepad to open one of the files. If it's WordStar 2000 it will say so at the start of the file, whereas WordStar 4 will have strange symbols at the ends of words.

If it's WordStar 4, go to the WordStar Conversion FAQ page: http://www.wordstar.org/wordstar/pages/convert_faq.htm#Q3, where you'll find a link to Microsoft's ftp server - the WordStar filter is still available from there. The server can sometimes time-out, so you may need to try this download link a few times. The description is for Word 95 but applies equally to all Windows versions of Word released since then, so follow the instructions there for installation and use.

If the files are WordStar 2000 this converter will not help. If you still have WordStar 2000 you can reinstall it, or copy it from another PC. Make sure you instal Star Exchange and use that to convert the files to RTF.

If you don't have WordStar 2000 any more go back to the Conversion FAQ, WordStar 2000 Conversion question: http://www.wordstar.org/wordstar/pages/convert_faq.htm#Q18, and download ViewFile. Instructions are with the link above.

Let us know how you get on.

That's one of the reasons I keep using WordPerfect

WP 7 & 8 & 2000 (I believe) support  WS conversion.

I Use WP 8 all the time to convert WS files.

& I use WS8 because it's the quickest wordprocessor I have, and has the fewest bells & whistles & is not bloated, can carry it on a thumb drive.

There's now another potential solution for WordStar 2000 files. I've persuaded the author of the HABit WordStar Converter to add WordStar 2000 support. He now needs some real-world testing of this to help complete development. If your files are WordStar 2000 please support this new converter version by getting it, trying it out, and then reporting back on how well it performs.

More details are available in the Announcement message board: http://www.wordstar.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=announce;action=display;num=1095533851

Thanks.
