Title: Wordstar XP Problem
Post by: Snow on November 23, 2004, 08:51:36 PM
Hi Everyone...

I just migrated to Windows XP from Windows 98 and I copied my Wordstar over to my new PC.
I got it to run under XP, but when I go to Edit/Create, and select a document to open, I always get this error message;

Can't open another window for editing or printing--
the current disk or directory is full.  Press Escape.

Has anyone seen this error before, and, hopefully, do you know how to fix it?

Many thanks in advance!

 Do you open WS from a DOS prompt?  That's how I do it.  While I know WS quite well (still use 7.0d), I don't know much about Windows at all.  Have used WS w. no problems w. 3.1, 98, 2000, and i think one computer w. XP.  I'll check on that tomorrow.  This computer uses 2000.

Hi,

Yes, this does happen sometimes but there doesn't seem to be a simple answer as to why. The usual way it can be fixed is by playing with the shortcut settings.

Take a look at the following messages and articles on the Web site - some of this may help:

For the DOS shortcut settings, have a look at:

http://wordstar.org/forums/index.php?topic=129.0 (http://wordstar.org/forums/index.php?topic=129.0)
And:
http://www.wordstar.org/wsdos/pages/shortcuts.htm (http://www.wordstar.org/wsdos/pages/shortcuts.htm)
Also (the same):
http://www.wordstar.org/ws2k/pages/shortcuts.htm (http://www.wordstar.org/ws2k/pages/shortcuts.htm)

This doesn't always work and some fiddling with the memory settings can resolve the problem. Also, try copying the shortcut from the good PC to the bad one.

Please let me know if any of this helps, or if you resolve the problem in a different way.

Update: 07 Feb 2007 - corrected the first of the three URLs

Thanks for the info...

I'll give it a try from a Cmd prompt, and try editing the shortcut and let you know how I make out.

Thanks,

Snow

Not sure why you are having the problem.  I use WS DOS 7.0 under XP without that problem (there are other problems, just not that one).

Do you recall that there are lines that need to be put in the config.sys file?  Well, XP doesn't use the config.sys file, it uses a config.nt file instead.  If you open the config.nt file it will have the prompts and disussion which shows what you can and what you can't do.

Add the lines that usually appear in your config.sys file at the end of the config.nt file.  Its in the c:\windows\system32 directory.  I have the following lines added at the end of the file:

dos=high, umb
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
FILES=60

Try it and let me know.
