Title: WSWin 1.5: problems with embedded images
Post by: Albireo on September 14, 2004, 09:06:12 PM
Hi!

I have some old files created with WordStar for Windows Version 1.5 (?; type *.wsd). I am able to open it with MSOffice 2000 after I have installed the WDSUPCNV.EXE converters. The text part of the file is O.K., but all the embedded graphics are not displayed (not even a box where they should be...).
My old program floppy disks got unfortunately lost during a rearrangement of my room...  :-[
Can anybody help me? Is there a trick? Thanx!

Greetings, Albireo

The import filters only support text. Your best option is to try and find a copy of WordStar for Windows 1.5 or 2.0, or WordStar Personal Writer (which is WSWin 2.0).

If you are a student or researcher, Star Office is free and its filters support both text and graphics. I've used it to convert WSWin files to other word processors and have gotten the graphics if they were embedded in the file. If the graphics were only linked, I still got the graphics frame showing where the graphics originally were.

Thanx!

I tried Star Office 5.2 (the last version which is for free) - and was able to open most of my old files. There are just some minor errors with the layout, but these can be corrected easily.
Just with one of my larger files I have a problem. Maybe there's an error in this file. Star Office shows me an error message like "loading error. reading problem. unknown error in the W4W filter".

Note the import filters are text only filters.  SO will show graphic boxes but will not import the graphics.

The error message is probably an indication that the w4w filter as hit something which it cannot convert to the Word for Word format for import into SO.

You can try downloading the evaluation version of SO7 and see if the problem was fixed with error handling on the part of SO.

You can also try downloading the evaluation version of QuickView (do a Web search to find it) and see if it will handle the format.  QV stopped development with the 1.0 version of SO, but may read 1.5.

I'm using SO6 and getting embedded graphics, but not linked graphics (just their frames). SO5.2 was the last version free for everyone, I believe; however, SO7 is free to students and researchers (otherwise you have to pay). Beginning with SO6, the free version is OpenOffice.org -- it's SO but without the conversion filters.

I would agree with Phil. Check out SO7. The problem you experienced with 5.2 may be fixed there. SO6 does a great job of converting (and not just WSWin), but if you have to pay, you might as well get SO7. In addition to first-rate conversion filters, SO is also pretty good word processing software.
